The face that turns away and comes back
Much of each day at this age goes into watching and listening to the people nearby, and by around three months a baby's eyes are learning to hold on a face and to follow it when it moves. A face that turns slowly away and comes back is both of those at once, and it is also a first taste of gone-and-back.

🛡️ Slow is the whole technique here — a face that appears and disappears quickly is startling rather than interesting. Stay far enough back that your whole face fits in their view, and let a turn away or a crumpling face end it rather than one more round.
