Stroke the palm and the hand grips — a newborn reflex, and in some cases reflexes change into voluntary behaviour. Grasping is also what encourages the small hand muscles, long before holding on is a choice.

🛡️ That grip is a reflex, not a choice — baby can't decide to let go, so never use it to pull them up to sitting or lift them. A few millimetres of resistance is the whole game; the moment you feel their arm taking any weight, ease off.
