When a baby this age is concentrating on you, that concentration tends to look like smiling, laughing, babbling and imitating you — and it can run for many minutes at a stretch. So this is not a lesson in copying. It is one sound, or one face, offered slowly and then left there long enough to be studied, and copied if that is where it goes. Whether anything comes back is not the measure; the studying already is it.

Give them something to copy

Face to face, close and unhurried

Settle baby facing you, on your lap or in your arms, close enough that your mouth is easy to see — and close enough to touch. Bring their hand up to rest on your cheek or your jaw, or turn in until you are cheek to cheek, so your face is somewhere they can find without having to look for it.
