A tour of holds

Some babies love to be snuggled tightly against your chest, some would rather look out over your shoulder, and some prefer to be held facing away from you altogether. Babies use their senses both to get acquainted with their surroundings and to find comfort, and every baby goes about that differently โ€” so trying a few holds is really just a way of asking yours.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Support the head and neck in every hold and, above all, in every change between holds โ€” that moment of transfer is where a newborn's head drops. Move slowly: no bouncing, no jolting, nothing that snaps the head back. Do it sitting down or standing still โ€” never on stairs, never with a hot drink in your other hand. Stop at fussing, arching away, or a glassy stare.

Start snuggled in at your chest

Carry baby snuggled in against your chest, a hand supporting the head and neck, and give it long enough to settle.
