The floor changes under them

The same suggestion — a variety of textured toys and surfaces — takes in the ones you already own: the rug, the bare floor, a towel folded flat. Nothing has to be bought or set up. You carry baby a few steps and everything under them has changed, and some days one of the two is plainly the better place to be.

🧺 You need

  • two floor surfaces that feel different — a rug and bare floor, or a blanket and a bath towel

🛡️ Tummy time is awake time — stay in the room and end it at the first sign of tiring: a head that stays down, a face pressed flat, grumbling that will not settle. Whatever they lie on stays flat and stays put: no rucked-up edges, no towel bunched near the face, nothing that can rumple over the nose. Sweep each surface before you set them down — cables, small objects and anything that would fit through a toilet-roll tube go somewhere else first. The trip between the two is a slow one, with their head and neck supported the whole way and no swinging or bouncing on the way over. Floor level only: a rug laid on a bed or sofa is not one of these surfaces.

The floor changes under them

Two floors, or one mat and a folded towel

Choose two spots whose floors have nothing in common underhand — a rug and bare boards, or a blanket and a bath towel. If there is only one spot in the house worth lying on, fold a towel over half of the mat they are already on and you have both surfaces without moving anything.
