Big, exaggerated voices are what grown-ups instinctively reach for with babies, and that dramatic approach is exactly what the AAP recommends for catching a baby's ear. Talking in silly voices is play for the hearing sense: no props, no rehearsal, nothing to get right, and whatever comes back is the whole reply.
