Mirror face time

Babies naturally prefer the human face over other visual patterns, and a mirror hands them one that is always there and always in sync. They will not recognise themselves yet โ€” the fascination is the point, and it makes tummy time worth it.

๐Ÿงบ You need

  • baby-safe (non-glass) mirror

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Tummy time is awake time โ€” stay in the room, and stop at the first sign of tiring: a head that stays down, or fussing that doesn't settle. Use a shatterproof mirror and prop it so it can't tip onto baby, or simply hold it yourself.

Mirror face time

Floor or lap โ€” a mirror close enough to matter

Lay baby tummy-down on the floor and set a baby-safe mirror about 25 cm from their face. Or skip the floor entirely โ€” sit them on your lap with their back against you, one arm round them, and hold the mirror in your free hand at the same distance. Both are the whole activity, and the lap one needs no floor space, no set-up and no second pair of hands.
