Some babies have two or three words around their first birthday, and a birthday with no words on it is not a thing that needs fixing. Alongside any of that, pointing and reaching toward what they want may already be doing much of the talking — so when a sound keeps turning up in the same situation, it costs nothing to answer it as though it means what it seems to mean.
