The same book, again
Understanding probably runs ahead of speech, so the words in a book that comes round night after night have plenty of chances to attach to something. Rereading the same one is not a failure of imagination; it is the point. Pages chewed, skipped, or slammed shut all count as having read it.
🧺 You need
- a board book — the same one, as many nights in a row as they want it
🛡️ Anything within reach goes to the mouth around now, so the copy in their hands is a board book rather than a paper one. Check the corners and the spine before you hand it over, and once a page has been chewed soft or torn, that book is finished — take it out of the pile rather than leaving it with them.
