One thing at a time, all the way there

Ferrying one item at a time across a room turns carrying into a real errand with an end to it: pick up, walk, put in, walk back. Doing the same short trip five times over is where the balance of a hands-full walk actually gets practised, and the basket filling up is the part they can see.

๐Ÿงบ You need

  • a laundry basket, box or bucket
  • five or six soft items bigger than a fist โ€” socks, cloths, soft toys

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Keep everything in the pile soft and bigger than a fist โ€” no coins, batteries, marbles or anything that fits fully in a mouth, because a toddler this age carries things in a mouth as readily as in a hand. Clear the route first.

Put the basket across the room

Set it far enough away to need a real walk, close enough to still see from the pile.
