Tummy time with both sides clear

Rolling over in both directions may arrive somewhere across these months. Nothing about it has to be practised. This is ordinary tummy-down floor time with the furniture pushed back โ€” so that if a turn does come there is somewhere for it to go, and so that in the meantime there is the plain pleasure of a body with room around it.

๐Ÿงบ You need

none โ€” a firm floor with an arm's length clear on both sides

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Tummy time is awake time โ€” stay in the room, and end it at the first sign of tiring: a head that stays down, a face pressed flat, grumbling that will not settle. Easing a trapped elbow out to the side is fine; what is never fine is turning them over by pulling on an arm or a leg โ€” if you help with a turn at all, it is a flat hand at the hip or shoulder and only as far as the body already wants to go. And once a roll can happen, it can happen off the edge of a bed, sofa or changing table โ€” never leave them on one, even for a second.

Tummy down, an arm's length clear on both sides

Put baby tummy-down on firm floor and clear an arm's length either side of them โ€” no cushions, no cables, nothing hard parked where a turn would finish.
