Down is part of the game

When standing appeals, a baby will pull themselves to a standing position every chance they get — and every one of those chances needs a way back down. Making the descent part of the play, with two of your fingers there to hold on the way down, means the landing is something you do together, calmly, rather than something that just happens.

🧺 You need

  • a rug or play mat for a soft landing
  • the low surface they already pull up on

🛡️ Babies reach standing well before they work out how to get down, so stay within reach for the stuck, straight-legged wobble: the floor around the surface needs to be soft and clear of hard corners, table legs and sharp edges. Anchor whatever they are holding — bookcases, drawer units, TV stands and anything on castors all come over when they take a baby's full weight. Stop when the legs start to shake; tired legs give way without warning.

Soft floor first

Lay a rug or play mat around the surface they pull up on — the floor is where this game finishes.
