One hand on the rail

Walking up and down stairs holding on to support is one of the last things a new walker adds, and it is genuinely different from walking on the flat — each step is a whole one-legged balance with a handhold instead of a second foot. Two or three steps, taken slowly with a hand on something, is the entire exercise.

🧺 You need

none — one flight of stairs with a rail or a wall to touch

🛡️ 🚨 Stay below them going up and below them coming down, every single time, close enough to catch — never above, and never on the phone. Two or three steps only, never a whole flight. The stair gate goes straight back afterwards; this is a supervised practice session, never permission to use the stairs alone.

One hand on the rail

Two or three steps, no more

Work at the bottom of the flight and treat the third step as the top of the world. There is nothing to gain from height here.
