Sideways along the sofa

When pulling up starts to appeal, furniture stops being an obstacle and becomes a handrail — a baby who is up on their feet may set off sideways along it, a hand's width at a time. A continuous edge at the right height means travelling has somewhere to go, with the hands never needing to let go.

🧺 You need

  • a sofa edge, or two steady low surfaces pushed together
  • a toy to set at the far end

🛡️ Every surface on the route carries their full weight, so anchor anything that could tip — bookcases, drawer units, TV stands — and take anything on castors out of the room, because a piece that rolls away takes the hands with it. Push the surfaces together so there is no gap to reach across, keep the floor soft and free of hard corners, and stay alongside rather than ahead: a cruise usually ends in a sit-down, and getting back down is the part that comes last. Stop at the first wobble that looks like tiredness rather than fun.

Sideways along the sofa

Build a route with no gaps in it

Push a couple of low, steady surfaces together, or use the long edge of the sofa, so there is one unbroken edge to hold. One arm-span of the surface you already have is a route — nothing needs rearranging for this to work in a small room.
