Water, ice, warm cloth

Temperature is a whole sense on its own and it needs almost nothing to explore. Cool water, one big piece of ice and a warm cloth give three clear points on a single scale, and a toddler can feel the difference long before they have any word for it.

๐Ÿงบ You need

  • a shallow bowl of cool water
  • one large ice cube
  • a warm damp cloth
  • a towel to sit on

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ ๐Ÿšจ Never leave them alone with any water, even a shallow bowl โ€” a toddler can drown in very little, very quickly, so this is a stay-beside-them activity throughout. Use one large ice cube, never small ones, because small ice is a choking hazard. Test the warm cloth on your own wrist, and keep a towel down against slips.

Water, ice, warm cloth

Towel down, bowl on top

Set the bowl on a towel at floor level so a splash lands on cloth rather than on a slippery floor.
