At the start of separation anxiety the wanting gets loud — and that desire to be with you is a sign of their attachment to you, their first and greatest love. The return is the half of any separation you can always do well, whatever the goodbye was like and whoever ended up in tears at it. What comes back at you may not be delight: tears, a turned back, a slump onto the floor. None of that is a verdict on you, and none of it changes what you do next.
