Say it just before you do it
Understanding probably runs ahead of talking: before many words of their own have arrived — if any have — a baby is likely taking in more than you would suspect. Saying the same short phrase a beat before the thing happens gives those words somewhere to attach, and nothing has to come back for it to be worth saying.

🛡️ This one rides on the nappy change, so it happens where the change happens: one hand stays on baby the whole time you are at the changing table, even mid-sentence. Announcing the next thing is not a reason to reach for it with both hands — bring the clean nappy and the socks within reach before you start.
