The noises the pictures make
Reading picture books is a way of tying a word to a picture, which is what Pathways suggests them for in these months. Sound words are the easiest place to start: short, repeatable, and each one attached to a single thing you can put your finger on. Some babies answer the noise and some watch your mouth make it — you need neither for the reading to count.
🧺 You need
- any picture book with animals, vehicles or weather in it
🛡️ A book that gets mouthed has to be a board book — chewed paper pages come away in pieces. Keep the noises at a comfortable volume and not right at their ear: a startle ends the book faster than boredom does. Drop the sound effects at flinching, a face that crumples, or hands that come up towards the ears.
