High-contrast gazing
⏱️ 5 min📦 paper and a pen🏠 indoor🤲 on their back👐 Sensory🧠 Cognitive
Newborns see best at about 20–30 cm — the distance from your arms to your face when feeding — and high-contrast black, white and red patterns are what they see most easily. Focused gazing is play in exactly the range they can already use.
🧺 You need
- black-and-white cards or bold patterns (DIY: thick marker on paper)
🛡️ Keep the card in your hand rather than propping it up — paper and card slide, and a baby on their back can't push one off their face. Nothing stays in the cot when you step away.
