A tray of five senses

Sensory play is a way to let a toddler explore the world, and it works by stimulating their senses through touch, smell, taste, seeing and hearing at once. A tray of ordinary kitchen things covers several of those in one sitting without a single bought toy.

๐Ÿงบ You need

  • a shallow tray
  • a lemon or orange half to smell
  • a warm damp cloth
  • a crinkly wrapper or paper
  • a smooth cold spoon

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Everything on the tray must be safe to taste, because at this age it will be tasted. No nut products, no whole grapes or cherry tomatoes, nothing small enough to swallow, and nothing hot. Stay within arm's reach for the whole tray.

A tray of five senses

Four or five things, one per sense

Something to smell, something warm to touch, something that crinkles, something smooth and cold. All of it safe in a mouth.
