How
Hold baby ~25 cm from your face when calm and alert. Slowly stick out your tongue, or open your mouth wide β hold it, wait up to 30 seconds, repeat. Sometimes baby mouths back; even when they don't, the intent studying of your face is the exercise.
Why this matters
Newborns are drawn to faces above all else, and unhurried face-study time feeds the circuits for reading expressions β the entry point of all social communication. (Whether true newborn imitation exists is scientifically debated; the face fascination is not.)
Source: face-preference research; neonatal imitation debate (Meltzoff & Moore vs. recent replications) β claim kept modest
