When baby is fed and alert, catch their gaze and give your warmest slow smile. Wait. When the smile comes back (emerging ~6–8 weeks), respond with delight — voice, bigger smile — then start the next rally. End while it's still fun.

Why this matters

The social smile is baby's first deliberate social tool. Every returned smile teaches "my signals move my people" — the root of communication confidence and a marked 2-month CDC milestone ("smiles when you talk to or smile at her").
